Tommy Emmanuel - Advice for musicians

This video is taken from Tommy Emmanuel “Master class @ Tommy Fest 2007″. Tommy shared on how to be a better (fingerstyle) guitarist & musician.
For me, if you are “serious” in guitar playing, or want to be a better guitarist, i believe it’s a very important and valuable class from Tommy Emmanuel. From the speech, Tommy Emmanuel is explaining some key factors to become a good musician/ guitarist.
Tommy said…

1) Everytime when we want to practice a new song/ any new technique, please always remember not to play or practice other song, except for the new song you targeted to learn or pratice. Everytime you pick up the guitar, play that new song only, not other song.

Why? Because we got to practice that new song over and over and over, until we are so familiar on it, even you could continue to play that new song when you are watching TV or having conversation with your friend. Only when we master the song, we start to enjoy the song, and that’s the time we put in our personality or spirit into that song.

2) There is only 1 thing in this world to make a better musician. You know what it’s?

“Repetition” (in simple word mean - play/ practice the song over & over & over…)

Because we got to play the same thing over & over, so we can think of not to play in front of your parents or your friends. Otherwise people will complain on us. In the end de-motivate us. As normally it wouldn’t sound good at the beginning stage. (Hope you all get what i mean: D)

I believe what Tommy said will surely help those “serious” musician to further understand what is mean by “practice”. What is work, what’s not. Including me as well. This is definitely a good/ golden advice to all of us. (i think we should thanks to the person that record this video…thanks! :D)

I still can remember my drum teacher (David Lim) told me, there are 2 types of practice, either practice the correct method, or practice the wrong method. If we practice the wrong method/ wrong approach, better close your book, stop practicing and go to sleep. I think everybody should know, “practice doesn’t make perfect”. “Practice will make permanent” in our mind. Just imagine if we keep on practice the wrong method for few hours a day, what will happened to us? Yes, we will surely become more worst and worst. Because we practice in wrong approach. I think everyone should remember this concept, especially for those beginners should always remember that.

Again, as what Tommy said, “Repetition” is definitely the key factor to become a better guitarist. That will be my target in practice any song.

Any comment is welcome; please feel free to post in your comment in this blog too. Or email me at kungfuguitar@hotmail.com

Good luck in practice :D
